Arizona toddler dies 'after mom accidentally struck her with car'

August 2024 · 3 minute read

A toddler died in a freak accident when her mom set her down on the driveway in her car seat, then inadvertently struck it with her car tire, cops say.

Cyra Rose Thoeming, who was 13 months old, died outside her home in Cottonwood, 100 miles north of Phoenix, on Thursday afternoon.

Investigators say that the mother, Jafria Thornburg, was parking her car outside of the family home when she took Cyra out of the vehicle while still strapped to her car seat.

Thornburg did so in order to maneuver the car out of a tight space, cops say, and believed she had set the little girl down in a gravel-covered area that was safe.

Yavapai County sheriff's deputies say that tragedy struck when the canopy of the car seat got caught in front tire and the seat fell into the path of the car.

Thornburg frantically called 911 and little Cyra was rushed to Verde Valley Medical Center with critical injuries. She did not survive.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Department's Criminal Investigations Bureau is still investigating the incident.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Cyra's family and pay for her funeral. At the time of writing, the page has raised nearly $10.000.

According to the blurb on the page, Cyra was born on May 16th, 2022 and passed away on July 6th in a terrible 'tragic automobile accident.'

'There isn't anyone who didn't smile their biggest after spending just a moment with her. It didn't matter how you felt, she would make your day better,' the description reads.

On Saturday morning, Cyra's father, Michael Thoeming, wrote a blog on the page.

Thoeming expressed his gratitude to those who have donated and then wrote heartbreakingly about his sorrow.

'She was a living miracle and reminded me, my spouse and all she came in contact with that the love of God and the goodness of heaven are often with us here on Earth in the form of a person,' he wrote.

Thoeming said that he and his would never stop 'carrying' their daughter in their hearts.
