It became a sleeper hit thanks to great word-of-mouth publicity and proved to be the suitable launching board for the chocolate-faced hero Shahid Kapoor. It was a typical campus romance starring fresh faces Shahid, Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasury. Shahid and Amrita have been friends since childhood and she secretly loves him. He considers her just as a friend, however. He begins to court her because of a silly bet but tells her the truth when drunk. When she berates him, he challenges that he’s going to make the best looking girl on the campus fall for him. That happens to be Shehnaz, who does get attracted to him as well. But Shahid’s character realises the difference between love and attraction and misses Amrita. He confesses his feelings for her in front of the whole assembly to win her over. They are all set to marry but at this juncture, his family learns he’s alive and demands he marries his fiancee, who has been living in his house as his widow. The film is set mostly in the rather large house owned by Om Puri, though it looked more like a film set than an actual house.

Her brother Bhope (Amole Gupte) doesn’t like ‘outsiders’ and gets Guddu beaten up. Meanwhile, Guddu's twin brother, Charlie (Shahid Kapur), is a street-smart small-time thug who gets caught in a drug deal gone wrong. What follows is a long, convoluted plot involving mistaken identities, where the two brothers must unite not only to fight the mafia but the corrupt police too. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film looked inspired by Guy Ritchie films, peppered as it was with lots of black humour and stylised action.
5. Shahid Kapoor Movie - R... Rajkumar (2013)
Director: Prabhu DevaCast: Shahid Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood
The film is a reworking of the Japanese cult classic Yojimbo (1961). Both owe allegiance to Hong Kong-based don Ajit Taaka (Srihari). Rajkumar begins working for Shivraj. But his life changes forever when he claps eyes on Chanda (Sonakshi Sinha), an orphan who has been brought up by Manik Parmar. Rajkumar has actually been sent by Taaka to clean up the operations. He makes friends with Shivraj’s men and then challenges him to a fight to the finish, which he wins. He later kills Takka as well for good measure. The townspeople turn against Parmar as well. Romeo is last seen walking off with Chanda. It was the most violent film of Shahid’s career and saw him in full action hero mode, beating 40 people at one go. The critics panned the film but it was declared a hit.
6. Shahid Kapoor Movie - Haider (2014)
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Narendra Jha and Irrfan Khan
The Haider film is both a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet and an adaptation of Basharat Peer's memoir Curfewed Night, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir. Haider (Shahid Kapoor), returns from Aligarh Muslim University to seek answers about his father Hilaal’s (Narendra Jha) disappearance. He begins searching for his father with the help of his childhood sweetheart Arshia Lone (Shraddha Kapoor), a journalist. He’s disturbed by his mother Ghazala’s (Tabu) behaviour, who seems to be besotted with his uncle Khurram (Kay Kay Menon). Haider contacts Roohdar (Irrfan), who turns out to be part of a separatist group. Roohdar tells him how he met Hilaal in one of the detention camps, where they both were tortured. He hints Khurram was behind both the imprisonment and Hilaal’s murder. Haider becomes mentally and emotionally shattered by the news. His only aim in life is to avenge his father’s death. But will that give him closure, especially after Arshia’s passing? Shahid Kapoor channelled the spirit of Prince Hamlet in his nuanced performance and won over both the critics and the masses.
7. Shahid Kapoor Movie - Udta Punjab (2016)
Director: Abhishek Chaubey
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Diljit Dosanjh, Satish Kaushik
Punjab has become a den of drug addiction and the Udta Punjab is an eye-opener about the fact. It points out how this culture flourishes with the help of a nexus between politicians and mafia and how even the police are involved in it. It also lays bare the fact that popular singers are propagating drug culture through their songs and their lifestyle. It’s not an easy film to watch as people are killed and abused because of their connection with drugs. Tommy (Shahid Kapoor) is a rockstar who lives on cocaine but changes his ways when he learns the harm his lifestyle has been causing. He rescues a Bihari migrant Bauria (Alia Bhatt) from the clutches of drug smugglers. Bauria has been sexually abused by them repeatedly but hasn’t lost the will to survive. Diljit Dosanjh plays Sartaj, a policeman whose younger brother is a drug addict. He collects evidence against a big shot politician engaged in the trade with the help of a doctor, Preet, played by Kareena Kapoor. Preet gets killed by Sartaj’s brother while he was escaping a rehabilitation centre. An enraged Sartaj takes the law in his own hands and kills the local drug dealers.
8. Shahid Kapoor Movie - Padmaavat (2018)
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor
Padmaavat tells of the immortal love between Rajput ruler Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and his second wife Padmavati (Deepika Padukone), who was a Sri Lankan princess. They fell in love when he was recuperating in Sri Lanka after being shipwrecked off the island’s coast. He marries her and takes her to Rajasthan, and they are considered the perfect match for each other. Tales of her beauty reaches the ears of Alauddin Khalji (Ranveer Singh), who is besotted by the description and wants to see her. Ratan Singh, of course, denies him this, thinking it to be against Rajput pride. This leads to an invasion of Chittor by Khalji. In order to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, Ratan Singh challenges Khalji to single combat. They both prove equal to each other at first but later Ratan Singh looks to have an upper hand. He’s killed by treachery at this point. Padmavati, upon hearing the news, commits suicide by jumping in a burning pyre and other ladies living in the fortress join her as well. The film was a visual extravaganza, what with Bhansali outdoing himself in maintaining the grandeur. The three leads gave heartfelt performances as well.
9. Shahid Kapoor Movie - Kabir Singh
Director: Sandeep Vanga
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Arjan Bajwa, Suresh Oberoi, Adil Hussain, Kamini Kaushal
Kabir Singh is the official remake of the 2017 Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy. Shahid Kapoor reprises Vijay Deverakonda role of a brilliant but self-destructive surgeon who descends into alcoholism and drug abuse when his girlfriend Preeti (Kiara Advani) is forcibly married to someone else. Kabir excels at everything, he's a university topper who is also a champion sportsman. When a football ground fracas leads him to thrash opposition players, he's suspended from the college for some time. "I'm not a rebel without a cause, sir," he rants to his dean (Adil Hussain), justifying that he lost his temper because the prestige of the college was at stake. What keeps us from noticing the film's flaws outright is the power-packed performance by Shahid Kapoor. He has done an amazing physical transformation on the film, managing to look like a student at first and later as a young professional, shedding at least a decade. His body language too is spot on. The madness, the rage of Kabir Singh is made almost palpable through Shahid's portrayal. His heartbreak and alcoholism seem real as well.
