NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One man is dead after a police pursuit across parish lines on Thursday (Jan. 11) morning.

The incident reportedly began when the suspect, identified by Sheriff James Pohlmann as 26-year-old Deiondre Brock, allegedly robbed and sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman at gunpoint in Violet during a sale of electronics. The suspect reportedly fled in the woman’s vehicle.

According to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, the carjacking took place shortly before 9 a.m. Deputies located the car and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect fled, Sheriff Pohlmann said.

The pursuit ended in a crash involving an 18-wheeler and a Department of Transportation and Development vehicle on the Judge Seeber Bridge on Claiborne Avenue, according to Sheriff Pohlmann.

Brock was discovered suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when authorities approached the disabled vehicle.

EMS pronounced Brock dead on the scene.

Pohlmann said the victim reported she and Brock did not know each other before the incident. She is now recovering in a hospital.

Pohlmann said Brock fired three rounds during the chase. Two came from within the vehicle and exited the vehicle. Pohlmann said it’s unclear why the trigger was pulled or at who.

He said the third was the self-inflicted shot.

Pohlmann said his deputies did not return fire.

The Claiborne Bridge was closed for several hours Thursday morning and was reopened around noon.
