Jose Fernandez was a Cuban-American professional baseball player. He was 6ft 3in tall and pitched for the Miami Marlins. Fernandez was born on July 31, 1992, in Santa Clara, Cuba. His parents were Maritza and Ramon. He had a sister named Yadenis, and a grandmother named Olga. Fernandez grew up in the same neighborhood as fellow baseball player, Aledmys Diaz. He defected from Cuba to the United States in 2008. Fernandez attended Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida. He entered and won an appeal in 2011 after he was deemed ineligible to compete his senior year.

CAREER
Fernandez began playing baseball in Santa Clara, Cuba. He continued his career at Braulio Alonso High School where he was a member of the Florida Class 6A state champions twice. Fernandez pitched for 13 wins and 1 loss during his senior year. He threw two no-hitters and finished with 134 strikeouts. Fernandez was signed by the Florida Marlins with the 14th Overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft. His contract at the time included a $2 million signing bonus. Fernandez played for the minor league teams, Jamestown Jammers, Greensboro Grasshoppers, and the Jupiter Hammerheads. His team ended the 2012 season with a 14-1 record, and he was named their Pitcher of the Year.

Fernandez made his debut with the Miami Marlins in April 2013 against the New York Mets. He’s played in 4 seasons from 2013 to 2016. Fernandez made the MLB All-Star Game in 2013 and again in 2016. He was named National League Rookie of the Year in 2013. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014.

Jose Fernandez died on September 25, 2016, at the age of 24. He was killed in a boating accident off Miami Beach, Florida. The final investigative report showed that Fernandez was driving the boat. He was also legally drunk and had cocaine in his system. Three people died in the incident. Their boat and bodies were discovered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Fernandez had a net worth of $3 million. He earned upwards of $6 million over the life of his career. His 2016 1-year contract with the Marlins was valued at $2.8 million. Fernandez was expecting his first child with his girlfriend, Maria Arias. She gave birth to a baby girl, Penelope, in February 2017.
