Don Rickles was an American comedian and actor. He appeared on programs like ‘The Tonight Show’, ‘The Dean Martin Show’ and ‘The Late Show’. His film credits include Kelly’s Heroes (1970) and the ‘Toy Story’ film series. Rickles was born Donald Jay Rickles on May 8, 1926 in Queens, New York. His parents were Etta and Max. He was an only child. Rickles attended Newtown High School followed by the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He also served as a seaman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
CAREER
Rickles began his career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian. He quickly developed a reputation as an ‘insult comedian’ due to his harsh response to his hecklers. His performance caught the eyes of Frank Sinatra who supported him during his rise to stardom. Rickles made his big screen debut in the war film, Run Silent, Run Deep (1958). The film was directed by Robert Wise and stars Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Other early films include The Rabbit Trap (1959) and The Rat Race (1960). He also appeared in the beach party films, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party and Beach Blanket Bingo.
Rickles started out his television career with guest appearances in shows like The Thin Man, The Twilight Zone, The Addams Family and The Dick Van Dyke Show. He made his first of many appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1965. Rickles gained further exposure as a frequent guest on The Dean Martin Show and The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast. His very own variety show, The Don Rickles Show, premiered on ABC in 1972. Other notable television shows include C.P.O. Sharkey, and Daddy Dearest.
Rickles’ debut comedy album, Hello, Dummy!, was released in 1968. He followed up with ‘Don Rickles Speaks’ in 1969. Both albums won Grammy Award nominations for best comedy recording. Rickles starred as Staff Sergeant “Crapgame” opposite Clint Eastwood in the film, Kelly’s Heroes (1970). He voiced the character “Mr. Potato Head” from the Toy Story film franchise. Rickles won a Primetime Emmy Award for the documentary, Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project (2007). His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.
